Of all the possible miracles which Jesus could have revealed His glory for the first time, why did He choose to turn water into wine at a small-town wedding? The Bible does not explicitly tell us, but the Pastor shares a connection he made while meditating on the Cross and the Communion. Perhaps the water-into-wine event served as a foreshadowing of what Jesus' grand mission was - and really, what OUR mission is as imitators of Christ. We begin in the water of purity and birth, and we symbolize that new birth with the pure water of baptism. But just as the Spirit compelled Jesus to pour out His life and blood for the salvation of souls, so we should also expect the Spirit to direct us down a path of blood. Water (cleanness/baptism) becomes wine (blood/sacrifice/Communion) through the Spirit. This was the life of Christ, and this is OUR life IN Christ.
