Pentecost Sunday is not always commemorated in Evangelical circles, but Trevor suggests that if we consider ourselves “born again of Spirit” as Jesus talks about in John 3, then the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is the Church’s birthday, and as worthy of memory as the day of our physical birth. As Christians, we believe that our physical life actually begins in the womb, long before our birthday. In the same way, the life of the Church is older than Pentecost in a real sense. However, there are elements of life that come on your birthday which are so significant that we consider it the beginning; without these things, you are not TRULY alive. The point of the message is that the Spirit (breath) of God in the Church is so vital to its life that we are not fully living unless we are “breathing” spiritually – in and out. It concludes with a warm invitation for all believers, not to question their salvation, but to be sure that they are breathing in the Spirit deeply enough to grow and thrive.
